With more than 2,500 miles of roads, nearly 5,000 miles of sidewalks, and a maze of underground pipes and sewer lines, San Diego focal point is on improving the infrastructure that has been in need of repair. Sewer structures along with libraries, police and fire stations, parks, streets, and storm drains are up for renewal. It is thought that basic infrastructure investments have been delayed due to the pension crisis and Great Recession. There have been water main breaks, sinkholes and dilapidated passageways in aging areas of the city, that have been on stand-by for maintenance until now . The 21st Century Investment Program is currently underway with an approximate funding of $4 billion to $5 billion, specifically designated for infrastructure projects. The reinvestment will also include an initiative to assist with the needs of veterans through a repair program for homes.
Interesting fact: the City of San Diego was incorporated in 1850 with a population of 650. Citizens obtained most of their water from the San Diego River and a few private wells.
