There have been a couple of incidents, just this year, of animals getting lodged in sewer openings. Thankfully, they were rescued putting concerned residents at ease. However, not before creating an unwelcomed imagery of what could be loitering in our homes. But what are the best practices for keeping our animals (and residents) safe in our attractive City? Since smaller animals, mice and rats for instance, have a better chance of gaining entry into the sewer system, one idea would be to install metal grates for floor drains. Wouldn’t that be better than the arrival of a ‘pocket pet’ in such an unannounced fashion? Another suggestion is to monitor sewer laterals for any openings that could potentially give way for rodents to enter. And finally, something else to ponder would be installing flap valves that will remain shut unless water is running through them. These are just a few things to remember to keep our residents happy, underground pipelines functioning and our furry and slithery friends out of the sewer system.
